How Your Surroundings Influence Motivation

With a background in design, I have always been sensitive to my environment…not only the physical surroundings but also the people within it.  Environment can have significant impact on your motivation levels and productivity and even the peace and comfort you feel while working.  In this blog post, we will explore the ways in which your environment can either fuel or hinder motivation, and provide actionable tips on creating an inspiring and motivation boosting space.  Everyone has different thresholds for disturbance. So take what makes sense for you and leave the rest

Tips for Creating a Motivation-Boosting Environment

1.  For many, a cluttered environment can feel overwhelming and drain motivation. Take time to declutter and tidy your physical workspace. Think about what organization system would work best for you. For example, you could group papers or art supplies by size, type or color. Use inexpensive storage solutions like boxes, racks, trays and trolleys to save money. The goal is to create a clean, inviting workspace that promotes focus.

2. Surround yourself with inspiration. Fill your environment with elements that motivate you like books, artwork, vision boards, quotes or objects related to your interests. Arrange your inspirational pieces so you see them often. Let them uplift you and spark creativity.

3. Design a Productive Workspace: Design a comfortable, distraction-free workspace. Make sure your workspace has proper lighting. Incorporate ergonomic furniture like a high-quality office chair and standing desks if possible. Use noise-cancelling headphones or partitions if needed to reduce external distractions. Customize it so everything aids your ability to focus.

4. Seek Supportive Relationships: Seek supportive relationships. Notice how being around certain people impacts your motivation, energy and productivity. Then look for opportunities to surround yourself with individuals who uplift and encourage you. Their positive energy and belief in you can give your motivation a significant boost.

5. Establish Rituals and Habits: Daily routines align your days with your goals. You might start workdays with meditation or visioning exercises. Or set specific work hours and break times. Ritualizing parts of your process can also help like reviewing at day's end. Habits create structure and maintain motivation.

Your environment, both physical and interpersonal profoundly influences motivation, performance and empowerment. By intentionally shaping your surroundings - decluttering, adding inspiration, controlling distraction, finding support - you can create a space that fuels your internal drive. Don't underestimate your environment's power to impact your mindset. Optimize it wisely and watch your motivation and productivity skyrocket.
